Project: Building 1 at TU Kaiserslautern, Kaiserslautern/Germany
For the conversion of the architecture faculty building at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern all the internal wooden partitions from the 1950s were removed to open up the interior and create bright new, almost transparent, spaces. Instead of a series of small rooms there are now large, interconnected student workspaces. The designers' intention was to create a coherent architectural whole through careful detailing and choice of materials, the use of the colour white throughout and by coordinating technical facilities.
The jury's verdict: "The project brings out the power and beauty of what was already there before, and opens up new ways of appreciating existing spaces and interiors."
