Project: Million Donkey Hotel, Prata Sannita/Italy 

The "Million Donkey Hotel" is a community project devised by a group of architects and artists with the active involvement of the local village population. The brief was to restore the link between two parts of the village that had been separated by a number of empty buildings. The result is a rambling hotel complex made up of all sorts of very different rooms and functional areas, which extends over various buildings and former ruins. The public space too was reclaimed and revived, and is now used much more by the villagers. All the materials used come from the immediate surrounding area. The hotel is managed and run by the local residents, who use the rooms out of season for cultural and social purposes.

The jury's verdict: "An exemplary project, which has secured the continued existence and future of a social group and a village."
