Project: LANDSCAPE HALL, Manresa/Spain

The Town Hall in Manresa stands right on the town's central marketplace. A new extension has been "implanted" into the existing building. The façade, made up of planes angled and folded like some abstract geometric solid, echoes the town's mountainous surroundings. Despite this extremely unconventional form, which stands in stark contrast to the existing architecture of the old town and to the chosen materials of wood and glass, the new extension has been successfully integrated into the original stone building by the use of the same grey paint finish throughout. 

The jury's verdict: "The jury was fascinated by the way an addition to a historic building can both fit in and yet retain its own distinctive character. What has been gained by the addition is not office space as such, but a new core to the building where people interact and communicate."
