Dr. Johann-Christoph Bürkle is a commentator and author of numerous books and articles on architecture.
After studying architecture, visual communication, German literature and the history of art at the Universities of Hamburg and Munich, he wrote his doctoral thesis on "Hans Scharoun and the Modern Movement" under Prof. Dr. Martin Warnke in Hamburg.
Initially Dr. Bürkle devoted himself to numerous teaching activities at various universities, including Liechtenstein University in Vaduz and ETH Zurich, where he worked as Senior Assistant at the gta Institute (History and Theory of Architecture). He also made a name for himself as curator of a number of architectural exhibitions at ETH Zurich. In 1994 Dr. Bürkle was invited to take up a professorship at the College of the History of Art and Architecture in Dessau.
As well as running the Niggli publishing house in Sulgen/Zurich Dr. Bürkle currently works as senior editor of archithese, a journal for the history and theory of architecture.
