Wolfram Putz, born in 1968, studied at the Technical University of Braunschweig, the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, USA, and at the Southern Californian Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, USA.
In 1998, together with Lars Krückeberg and Thomas Willemeit, he established the architecture label GRAFT in Los Angeles. The new practice embraced architecture, urban design, music and "the pursuit of happiness". In 2001 he opened a second office in Berlin, followed in 2004 by a third office in Beijing, set up with partner Gregor Hoheisel. In the meantime the practice has expanded to around 100 staff members. The partners are members of the BDA.
Against a background of formal experimentation associated with the "wild style" movement in art and architecture, GRAFT also belongs to that international avant-garde that experiments with an extended and amorphous vocabulary of forms. The studies and finished projects produced by the GRAFT practice reveal extensive experimentation with the new possibilities of the parametrization of space and volume through the use of the computer. The work of the practice is by no means confined to architecture, urban design and interior finishing work. GRAFT's back catalogue also lists exhibition and gallery design, stage design, car interior designs and furniture ranges.
