Francesca Ferguson, born in 1967, is a curator for architecture and urban design and lives in Basel and Berlin. After studying for her Masters degree at Oxford University, Francesca Ferguson worked as associate producer for ABC News in Berlin and reported on German reunification and the political changes taking place at that time in Eastern Europe.
From 1992 onwards she worked as a freelance journalist in places such as Asia, the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Following her return to Berlin the focus of her work shifted to curating. After a brief period as assistant curator at the Kunst-Werke Berlin (Institute for Contemporary Art), she co-organized the "Club Berlin" music event at the Venice Biennale. In the years that followed Francesca Ferguson curated a variety of interdisciplinary projects for the "House of World Cultures" in Berlin, the Gramercy Art Fair in New York, and was also an assistant curator for the Artimage Media and Architecture Biennale in Graz. In addition she was responsible for the gallery program of the Schloss Solitude Academy in Stuttgart. Francesca Ferguson is curator and initiator of Urban Drift, an international network for architecture and urban design.
Since 1999 Urban Drift has organized exhibitions, conferences, symposia and workshops that address architectural themes in the context of economic and social developments. On the occasion of the 9th International Exhibition of Architecture held in conjunction with the 2004 Venice Biennale she curated DEUTSCHLANDSCHAFT, a photographic panorama of outlying (sub)urban areas in Germany. Her latest exhibition, TALKING CITIES - The Micropolitics of Urban Space - was on the program of ENTRY2006, an international forum for architecture and design held at the former Zollverein coal mine in Essen.
Since September 2006 Francesca Ferguson has been the new Director of the S AM - Swiss Museum of Architecture in Basel.
