Prof. Valentin Bearth was the co-founder, with Andrea Deplazes, of the office Bearth Deplazes in Zurich in 1988. He studied at the Swiss Technical College in Zurich and worked for four years in the studio of Peter Zumthor before setting up his own practice. In 2001 the two original partners were joined by a third, Daniel Ladner, and the new office of Bearth & Deplazes Architekten AG was set up in Chur. In 2004 they opened a second office in Zurich.
In 1992 Prof. Valentin Bearth was appointed a full professor in the Department of Architecture at the Swiss Technical College in Zurich. In 2000 he was appointed to a chair at the Academy of Architecture at Switzerland's Italian University in Mendrisio, where he was in charge of the second-year study program. Since 1 September 2007 Valentin Bearth has been Director of the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio.
