As well as a Master's degree in architecture from Harvard University, Markus Schaefer has a second Master's degree in neurobiology from the University of Zurich.
Before setting up his own office Markus Schaefer was director of AMO, the conceptual/consultancy branch of OMA, the office of Rem Koolhaas. Markus Schaefer currently holds a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
In the autumn of 2003 he and Hiromi Hosoya set up their joint practice HOSOYA SCHAEFER ARCHITECTS in Zurich. Together with a list of international partner offices, the practice is engaged in a series of projects involving everything from design and realization to research and consulting. The practice operates at all levels of scale - working in the field of urban design and building design as well as on brand concepts and media installations.
