Project: Fachhochschule Sihlhof, University building, Zurich/Switzerland
Third prize of Category "Education"
In Switzerland the Sihlhof is the first new school building to emerge from the conversion of high schools into technical colleges. Working within the confines of the given space and using it to maximum effect, it proved possible to create a multiplicity of spaces while achieving the effect of an integrated sculptural whole. The interior is astonishingly light and spacious in a way that the observer would never suspect from the outside. The core of the building has been hollowed out to create two superimposed and offset central courtyards. And right at the top a bridge spans this inner courtyard space, affording a vertiginous view down to ground level.
The jury
commends this project as "an important contribution to the architecture of educational buildings. By maintaining such a clear focus on architectural discipline they have bestowed dignity on the schools accommodated within this building - a dignity that elevates them above the mundane reality of city life outside."
