Project: S(ch)austall, Exhibition area, Ramsen/Germany
Special award Category "Shop"
The theme of the S(ch)austall is a 'house within a house' - an idea that has been realized before in countless permutations. In this case, a new timber house has been 'implanted' into an existing stone-built structure. 'It does not impinge on the existing structure, but the new roof protects the older building. The windows are like blueprints of the older house. This is an intriguing and provocative device, as the observer does not immediately understand why, for example, a window is positioned low down in the right corner, or why it is so small. At night the effect is of a rough, worn outer skin that harbours a warm, homogenous inner life.
In the jury's statement they explain:
"What distinguishes this project is the discovery that even an apparently worthless ruin holds great architectural potential (...) The architects have breathed new life into a building previously declared dead, and have given new meaning to a former ruin in a sensitive and poetic way."
