Project: Waterside pavilion, Riesbach on Lake Zurich, Zurich/Switzerland
Third prize of Category "Hotel"

The new pavilion on the shore of Lake Zurich is situated like an art installation between the trees of the listed parkland that forms the waterfront. Hundreds of thousands of people visit the site every year. The steel skeleton structure creates a simple framework that allows the architects to fuse the functional elements - a kiosk and WC facilities - into a simple, almost organic form. The careful use of coloured glass panels gives the construction a special identity, with no clear sense of a main or subsidiary frontage. Instead the large sheets of glass create an impression of lightness and all-round transparency that is transformed at night by changing colour sequences.

The jury's verdict:
"We were impressed by the use of sophisticated, well-considered architectural devices on a building that serves quite a utilitarian function. Viewed from the outside and from within, the progression of the subtle, natural colour tones of the windows and glass panels contrives to create a surprisingly simple and other-worldly effect: almost like the shifting colour nuances of a seascape seen through a Viewmaster. The simplicity of the means employed is striking."
