Behind the classic facade on Barcelona's Calle de la Princesa the architects of the Hotel Chic@Basic Born have opted for an interior plan that adapts itself to the hotel's urban context. Hence the unconventional room layout. The only windows on the street frontage are in the bathroom suites. The window units consist of prefabricated cells, manufactured offsite, which cleverly protrude beyond the edge of the rooms. The interior surfaces of the room are white throughout, and the old stucco ceilings have been covered with smooth plasterboard. Although partially obscured, ingeniously placed strips of mirror attached to the walls allow a glimpse of these and other historic architectural features of the original structure. Thus hotel guests can discover the history of the building in a playful and charming way.
The jury's verdict:
"An outstanding example of how to deal with historic buildings in a way that is both bold and sensitive. The design vocabulary is both ultramodern and light of touch."
